How many times have you gone into the freezer, pulled out that chicken breast or those frozen strawberries and found them too frozen to cook or eat, so you run the frozen food under hot tap water for five to ten minutes. I've done it. We've all done it. In fact, it's something so innocuous that most of don't even think of it as detrimental to the environment. But it is a huge waste of potable water.
Instead, consider these two eco-friendly alternatives to running your cold turkey under the hot tap.
Plan your meals. Put the frozen food in the fridge the night before, and it should be sufficiently thawed by lunch time the following day. Remember a full fridge is an energy-efficient fridge.
Microwave it. Instead of putting it under the tap. Defrost the food item in the microwave. It takes electricity to pump the water into your house, and a microwave doesn’t use that much electricity.
The next time you eat something out of the freezer, make sure to conserve water and defrost it the eco-friendly way.
